Pumpkin Peanut Butter Dog Treats

Baking treats for your pup is wholesome and delicious! This recipe has pumpkin and ginger for calming the digestive system, oats which are filled with nutrients, with peanut butter and cinnamon for taste. Our seniors get so excited when I pull out the ingredients because they know their favorite treat is in the making!

Ingredients

2 cups whole wheat flour

2 large eggs

1/2 cup oats

1/2 cup canned pumpkin (use 100% pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling)

2 tbsp peanut butter (make sure it does not contain xylitol- we like to use peanut butter that is 100% peanuts and no added ingredients)

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350. Mix all ingredients except flour. Gradually stir in flour until it makes a stiff dough. Knead the dough and add more flour if it is too sticky. Roll out the dough onto a floured countertop until about 1/3 inch thick. Use a glass or cookie cutters to cut out the treats and place them on a baking sheet. Continue kneading, rolling, and cutting until all the dough is used. Bake for 20 minutes. Cool. Keep refrigerated.

LIVER HEALTH DOG FOOD

IMG_9471.jpg

When your dog has special medical issues that require a specific diet to maintain their health, sometimes it is best to make homemade food to ensure they are getting all of the ingredients they need. Lilly has liver disease and has improved tremendously on this diet. She also has a daily dietary supplement she takes that is a prescription. Please remember, every dog is different, so please check with your veterinarian first.

Ingredients

2 lbs. diced boneless, skinless, chicken breast

3 lbs. sweet potatoes

3 large eggs

1 lb. green beans

1 cup brown rice

1 cup fresh chopped spinach

1 cup blueberries

1/2 cup shredded carrots

1/2 tsp. Rosemary

Boil whole sweet potatoes until soft (you can poke a fork in them to check). Rinse with cold water. Once cooled, you will be able to easily pull the skin off. Discard the skin and mash the sweet potatoes with a fork. Set aside.

Heat a frying pan on medium heat with 1/2 tbsp. olive oil. Add chicken and cook until no longer pink in the center- about 10-12 minutes. Beat 3 eggs and add to the frying pan. Stir until eggs are cooked completely.

Boil 1 cup brown rice as directed on package.

Boil green beans and carrots together for 20 minutes. Drain.

Add sweet potatoes, rice, green beans, and carrots to chicken and egg mixture. Stir.

Add chopped spinach and blueberries. Stir thoroughly.

 Cool. Keep refrigerated.

This will keep well in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Please freeze any more than what your dog will eat in that time for future use.

Kidney Health Diet

For kidney disease it is important to restrict salt, and maintain a diet low in phosphorus and proteins, but rich with omega-3 fatty acids.

Ingredients

2 lbs. lean ground beef

1 29 ounce can pure pumpkin

6 egg whites

1 lb. green beans

2 cups brown rice

1 cup blueberries

1 large apple, chopped (remove core and seeds)

1/2 cup shredded carrots

2 tbsp. coconut oil

Brown ground beef in a large pot. Do not drain. Stir egg whites and coconut oil into the hot beef.

Prepare 2 cups brown rice according to package.

Boil green beans and carrots together for 20 minutes. Drain.

Stir beef and egg mixture, rice, green beans and carrots, pumpkin, blueberries, and apple together.

Cool before serving.

When serving, stir in warm water to make it like a thick soup. With kidney disease, lots of water is important, so by adding it to the food it increases water intake.

This will keep well in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. Please freeze any more than what your dog will eat in that time for future use.
